Blog & News/What to Pack for a Spring Travel Assignment in New York
Part of the fun of being a travel nurse is experiencing different cultures. With each new location, however, comes distinctive climates and environments to manage. If you are heading to Michigan during the winter months, packing for cold and snow is a no brainier. New York in the springtime is a little more challenging. What are the right spring clothes for New York?
The mornings will be cool and dewy. By afternoon, the sun will be up and the temperature rising. When the sun drops low in the sky, you will fill the chill once again. What can you do with a climate that keeps you guessing? Dressing in layers is a key survival tip to remember when working in New York in the spring.
T-shirts – This is especially critical if your shift starts at dawn and goes all day. A T-shirt under your scrub top is just enough to keep you warm on your way to work whether driving, walking or taking the train. A T-shirt is also light enough that you won’t overheat indoors as the world outside starts to warm up.
Cardigan sweater – The T-shirt is perfect for under your top, but it might not be enough when the weather is crisp and cool. A cardigan sweater or light jacket is the second half of the layers rule. Pull it on when the T-shirt isn’t keeping you warm and take it off when it's too much.
Warm jacket – The final layer in your spring clothes for New York plan is a warm jacket. At night, the temperature will drop. If you are just leaving the hospital, hitting the gym after shift or enjoying a night out on the town, you will need something heavier to keep the spring chill at bay.
Rain is an almost certainly during the spring months in The Empire State. Find an umbrella that can travel when you do. This way you will be ready when waiting for the bus or running to get a bite to eat during your break. A compact umbrella is easy to stuff into the bag you take with you to work or hide away in the one you carrying while seeing the sights of the city.
If your assignment is taking you to the Big Apple, comfortable shoes are a high priority. You can expect to do a lot of walking when in the city. Pack comfortable walking shoes to wear as make your way through NYC. A second pair of shoes to walk around in will save wear and tear in your work shoes, too. Walking is liable to be a primary source of transportation no matter what you do while on assignment. Pack a pair of shoes that keep your feet happy.
Going on assignment in New York during the springtime is one of the perks of being a travel nurse. You will enjoy your work that much more if you pack the right clothes for the trip.
