3 Healthy, Energizing Breakfasts for On the Go

June 17, 2014

When I'm preparing for a long day shift at work, one of the key things I do to get ready is to eat a healthy, energizing breakfast. And because I don't want to wake up any earlier than I need to, I choose a breakfast that is easy to eat on my way to work, or even to finish at work during the morning. The best breakfasts should include protein for long-lasting energy, some carbohydrates for quick energy, and fiber to help you feel full and satisfied.

Yogurt Parfait: Start with plain nonfat Greek yogurt, which packs a lot of protein without the fat or many carbs. Then add toppings to make it a complete breakfast. I love sprinkling some toasted oats or granola on top, adding some chopped nuts for extra protein and some good fats, then mixing in some fresh fruit for the touch of sweetness I'm looking for. It's easy to eat this healthy breakfast on the go with a spoon.

Breakfast Sandwich: There are so many options for healthy and delicious breakfast sandwiches, but most of them start with an egg for a protein foundation. Then add a slice of lean meat, some tomato, wilted spinach, and perhaps a bit of flavorful cheese. Ripe avocado can also provide healthy fats. Put it all together on whole wheat toast or bagel and wrap it up to easily eat the sandwich with one hand.

Super Smoothie: What could be easier than a breakfast you drink? Go beyond the fruit and sherbet commonly found in smoothies and add some other ingredients to pack in the protein, fiber, and nutrients. Some of my favorite ingredients include wheat germ, flaxseed, nut butter, greens, yogurt, and protein powder. Portion out the ingredients beforehand, then in the morning, just toss it in the blender, put it in your favorite big cup, and drink it on the go.

Having a healthy breakfast every morning is all about finding what works for you and having all the ingredients on hand so you never have an excuse to skip breakfast. As a nurse, you will need all the energy you can get so you can give your patients everything they need during your shift. If you take care of your health and energy needs from the time you wake up, you will be at your best every day.
