Blog & News/Why Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Matters: One Story of Courage, Strength and Hope
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month - a time to honor the strength of children battling cancer and recognize the families, caregivers and healthcare professionals who support them every day. At Fastaff Travel Nursing, we're grateful for the nurses who provide compassionate care during some of life's most challenging moments. And we're grateful to our Fastaff employee for the sharing the story of their son, Silas.
Meet Silas: A Story of Unshakable Strength
During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we're reminded that behind every diagnosis is a child, a family and a community learning to navigate challenges they never expected. Silas's story is one of resilience, hope and the incredible strength that can shine through even the most difficult circumstances.
Shortly after his third birthday, a series of urgent care and emergency room visits led to life-changing news: Silas had a brain tumor. Within days, he underwent surgery to remove the mass, which doctors identified as ependymoma. His recovery was anything but simple. In addition to undergoing 33 sessions of radiation therapy, Silas worked tirelessly through physical and occupational therapy to regain skills affected by complications from surgery.
Even amid treatment, Silas continued to show remarkable determination. When his radiation therapy was complete, he proudly rang the bell and stepped back into being a kid. The following year was filled with swimming lessons, sports, dance classes and the everyday moments that every child deserves to enjoy. Multiple scans came back clear, giving his family hope that brighter days were ahead.
Then came another setback. An MRI revealed three new lesions in a different area of his brain. Surgery wasn't an option, and traditional radiation carried significant risks. Within days, Silas and his family packed their bags and temporarily moved to Cincinnati, where he received proton radiation therapy at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
The treatment was demanding, but Silas faced it the same way he had every challenge before it: with courage, positivity and a spirit that inspired everyone around him. His medical team often remarked on his energy and optimism, even during the toughest days.
Today, Silas continues to be closely monitored, and recent scans have shown no evidence of new growth or spread. While the road ahead still includes uncertainty, his family remains focused on what has carried them through from the beginning: hope, love, and the light Silas brings into the world every day.
This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we honored children like Silas, their families and the healthcare professionals who care for them through every milestone and every challenge. Stories like his are a powerful reminder that strength comes in many forms, and sometimes it looks like a little boy who refuses to stop smiling.
"Courage means to be brave, strong and to fight like a superhero." - Silas
