Travel Nurse StatsThere are approximately 15,000-20,000 travel nurses working in U.S. hospitals on a daily basis. And twice as many nurses have traveled or will consider traveling again in the future. Perhaps you are one of those nurses. Although travel nurses only make up approximately 1% of the 2.7 million nurse population in the U.S., they are invaluable in the current nursing shortage. With an aging patient population, travel nurses are being used more and more with the higher patient census. Additionally, as the current RN population ages and retires, travel nurses are being called in to fill the nursing voids being left behind. Finally, some states, including California, have recently mandated lower nurse-to-patient ratios. With the lower ratios, the need for additional nurses to provide quality patient care has increased substantially and facilities have had to look at travel nurses as an option to meet the demand. Travel nurses earn between $22-$35 per hour. A travel nurse working 40-hours per week, for 50 weeks a year would earn $44,000-$77,000 per year. Some travel nurses earn as much as $100,000 per year particularly those travel nurses on assignment in California where overtime rates are paid after 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week. |
