Requirements Of Being A Traveling Nurse

Any nurse wishing to pursue a career as a traveling nurse must meet certain set requirements. All traveling nurses must possess a degree from an accredited institution. To be a traveling Registered Nurse, you must obtain a minimum of an Associate's degree from an accredited school. Traveling nurses must also have a minimum of two years of acute care experience in their specialty. This experience ensures that you will have the knowledge base and skills to jump into your assignment and learn quickly.

Additionally, traveling nurses must obtain licensure in the state where their assignment is located. There are 22 states that practice license reciprocity, which allows a nurse who is has a license in one of the 22 states to practice legally in any of the other states. These states are known as the NLC (Nursing Licensure Compact) states. All remaining states within the U.S. have different licensing requirement and these requirements must be met prior to a nurse going on a travel nursing assignment within that state.

Nurses must also provide skills checklists that identify their skills levels, as well as various documentation for tax purposes, immunizations and certifications.
