Going Through The Licensing Nursing Process

Almost 100 years ago, state governments established boards of nursing to protect the public's health and ensure the safe practice of nursing. Today there are boards of nursing in all 50 states that set the standards for nursing licensing. These boards also follow the licensees and monitor compliance, taking action against any nurses who do not follow safe nursing practices.

Each state provides its own nursing licensing requirements. All states will ask that a nurse have a degree or diploma from an accredited educational institution and that the nurse pass the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination). Nursing licensing will often also require a monetary fee, background check and verification of U.S. citizenship among other requirements.

Each state's nurse licensing process varies in time length too. Some states allow "walk thrus", which allow nurses to present their credentials for verification on-site and gain their state license in the same day. Other states require months for the verification process to be completed and the nursing licensed is issued.

22 U.S. states are part of a compact state alliance that allows nurses who reside within one of the compact states to use their license of residence to practice nursing in any of the other 22 states without having to go through additional state nurse licensing verification.

All states offer information on nurse licensing via the government web sites. Any nurses wishing to obtain more information can do so via these online sources.
